Matt Wilmot is a Qualified Mine Surveyor and the founder of Wilmot Mining Consultancy Ltd — a practitioner who works at the intersection of technical rigour and operational instinct, where data meets decades of ground truth. With over 25 years in deep mining operations and major project development, he has been shaped by environments where the consequences of getting it wrong are measured not in revenue, but in lives.

His career spans some of the most technically demanding operations and projects in the UK extractive industry — including several coal mines, Boulby Mine, the Woodsmith polyhalite mine in the North York Moors (one of the largest and most complex new mines ever planned in British history), and most recently the Khemisset potash project in Northern Morocco. After qualifying as a mine surveyor within the coal industry, he has held the appointed surveyor’s position at Boulby Mine and for the construction of Woodsmith Mine — covering four sites, the sinking of multiple shafts via different methodologies, and the development of a 37 km tunnel. In these roles he has held statutory accountability — not advisory accountability — for the safety and integrity of his and his team’s actions in relation to the control of major mining hazards. This accountability is something he has translated into moral accountability in his project roles, ensuring that — to the best of his ability — the projects he’s involved in become the best versions they can be for all stakeholders: investors, local communities, regional and national governments, the environment, and the ultimate operators.

On a recent project Matt recognised that the resource could be doing more than was currently being asked of it, and identified the right specialist to investigate. That collaboration has produced a patent-pending process (UK grant expected April 2026, with international filings to follow), and Matt was then able to translate what it would mean for the project as a whole. The patent is the team’s; the contribution he is describing is recognising the gap, finding the right person, and carrying the implications back into project-level decisions.
